Centerpiece Designs

Edition 2, October/November 2024
This piece was inspired by my fellow classmates' discussions about the Mendez brothers. As I started writing the story, I knew I wanted the design to resemble a crime board. Through our letters to the editors, I learned our readers enjoy more alternative copy, which I incorporated alongside my story. However, it took some trial and error to arrange all the elements without the board looking too messy.

I designed this centerpiece, and my Co-Editor-in-Chief wrote the story which taught me more about collaboration. The most challenging aspect was the infographics, since I didn't have a lot of experience designing them prior. However, with some good design inspiration I took on the challenges and was very proud of the results.

Originally, this piece was two different designs and stories created by me and another editor, which my advisor suggested we combine. At first I felt overwhelmed while combining them. I spent hours meticulously arranging the layout of the cutouts and grouping them together. I wanted to visually divide the hair section from the body image section, which I accomplished by using blue and purple.

Edition 1, Janurary/Feburary 2024
As the first centerpiece I designed this spread taught me about the basic elements of design. I balanced the circular time-line dates with the explanation boxes and the Q&A boxes. Also, I used ibisx paint for the first time to draw the robot AI graphic.

Our school implemented an "All in" theme which we covered in this issue. I modeled the cover after a scrapbook because they symbolize memories, and this edition encouraged making the most of high school.

Reflecting the social media themed centerpiece, this cover highlights how overwhelming social media is with the abundance of notifications. I also added a cracked-screen background to represent the dangers behind our screens.

This cover is modeled after the true-crime themed centerpiece. Once again, Canva came in handy for the graphics. I made multiple versions of this cover before ultimately deciding this one fit the theme the best.

As student gambling rose to a new high within my school, the centerpiece covered this issue. In this cover I utilized popular ways students were gambling in class, such as with poker cards.
Single-Page Designs

Edition 1, September 2024
My favorite part of design it how it's like a puzzle, and arranging the costumes into packages felt like one. I added the arrows as a final touch to tie each costume together as well. Also, I found a spooky font for the headline of this Halloween-themed page.

Edition 2, March/April 2024
This was my first design for the paper, but it was pushed back to the second issue due to ad spacing. From adding a drop cap to cutting out the vinyl graphic from Canva, I learned a lot of basic design with this page. The sidebar gave me the most difficulty and took some trial and error to neatly arrange all its elements.

At the start of this year, I re-designed our contents page. I added teaser photo boxes to attract readers' attention, which our publication hadn't done before.

Last year, I designed a new standard Q&A format which we've continued this year. I utilized cut-outs for a more modern look, which our publication hadn't used in previous years. I also carried over the L shapes to our folios for repetition.
